If You’re Still Waiting to Plant, Use This Time to Evaluate Your Herbicide

The latest USDA report on planting progress shows that many corn acres remain unplanted, confirming an unusually slow start to the 2018 season. As mentioned in our previous post, it is important to assess your weed management program to ensure it can adapt to Mother Nature’s curveballs. Fortunately, there are flexible, crop-safe corn herbicides on the market that will help your crops withstand unpredictable weather and protect them from yield-robbing weeds.

When evaluating the strength of your herbicide against this season’s challenges, make sure that you pay attention to these 3 factors:

1.) Application flexibility.

The preferred herbicide application timing to prevent early-season weed competition is pre-emergence. However, when faced with a tight planting window, it is beneficial to select a herbicide that can be applied both pre-emergence and post-emergence to help save you time, money and worry when dealing with weather-related application delays. By contrast, if you use a herbicide with a limited application window, it may have to be returned to the dealership and exchanged for a different product, which could add stress to an already stressful situation.

This chart shows the application flexibility of Acuron, Corvus and Verdict herbicides.

Performance evaluations of Acuron®, Corvus® and Verdict® herbicides are based solely upon interpretation of public information and field observations.

2.) Residual control.

If you’ve already applied your herbicide and are now facing planting delays, you may be worried that your weed control will run out too soon. While some herbicides have limited residual control, others offer long-lasting residual activity.

This chart shows Acuron residual control compared to Roundup PowerMAX.

Trials reflect treatment rates commonly recommended in the marketplace.

3.) Crop safety.

It’s critical that you use a corn herbicide that has been proven to deliver excellent pre- and post-emergence crop safety even in adverse weather conditions. Not all products include a crop safener and even if they do, particularly in the case of generics, it is unknown what safener is being used or at what rate.

To cover all your bases using one product, we suggest applying Acuron® corn herbicide. You can experience:

  • Application flexibility from 28 days pre-plant up to 12” corn
  • Residual control of 8+ weeks when applied at the full labeled rate*
  • Reliability of the proven corn safener, benoxacor, for crop safety even in adverse weather conditions when used according to the label
