Three Tips to Help Maximize Corn Yield Potential

Spring has sprung, and while it still may feel like winter in some parts of the country, it’s important that you don’t let that stop you from starting corn planting preparations. Many things can attack your bottom line throughout the season, so get started on the right foot by maximizing your yield potential at planting.

Here are 3 corn planting tips agronomic experts recommend you keep in mind:

  • Pay attention to hybrid genetics: Get to know your hybrid genetics through and through. Before you start planting make sure you know the soil types and other environmental and management conditions in which your hybrids are most likely to thrive.
  • Make a soil type map of your field: Factors such as soil texture, nutrient-holding capacity and water-holding capacity can make a big difference in how a hybrid yields. Learn where different soil types are in your fields and plan to place hybrids accordingly. For example, some hybrids thrive in fine soil, while others do better in coarse conditions.
  • Check field drainage and soil pH: Each hybrid should be planted in an environment where it can succeed. You can make sure you’re doing this by being aware of how each field drains water and what the soil pH levels are.
